Tasting Notes from the Director's Desk

BR COHN CABERNET SAUVIGNON SILVER LABEL   The 2006 Silver Label Cabernet Sauvignon reflects a blending of grapes grown from the B.R. Cohn Olive Hill Estate Vineyard and select North Coast vineyards. This combination offers full, rich flavors of berry, cassis and black cherry with hints of vanilla in the background. Aging with French oak adds complexity and depth, making it a wonderful accompaniment to a grilled sirloin steak.

KU DÉ TA NAPA CABERNET SAUVIGNON   This Cabernet is supple and elegant with layers of currant, blackberry, and black cherry fruit flavors with a hint of cedar notes. Its balance flavors make it a good match with red meats, flavorful and heartier pastas, lamb and strong cheeses.

KU DÉ TA MALBEC   Deeply flavored yet rounded and luxurious in texture, the taste has a ripe fruit flavor with a slight oak edge. It is sufficiently rich to stand up to red meat dishes, but its softness makes it an ideal pairing with veal or pork.

KU DÉ TA RIESLING   This Riesling offers ripe fruit flavors of peaches, green apples and a touch of apricot with just the right amount of crisp acidity. Ideal with the zest and spice of Asian food, you can also try it with sushi, appetizers, or of course, on its own.

KU DÉ TA SAUVIGNON BLANC   Intense aromas of tropical and citrus fruit are evident on the nose, while the flavors of grapefruit and citrus are elegant and complex. The crisp, balanced acidity make it perfect with grilled seafood or goat cheese.

CHALONE PINOT NOIR   This wine has a huge aroma filled with blackberry and anise. It has a light body, but the deep dark mouth filling cherry and strawberry flavors make it seem much fuller. Just when I thought things were going to get overly sweet and juicy the back end kicked in and brought a whole new wave of spicy and smoky flavors with hints of anise and strawberry. Try it with turkey, game, pork tenderloin or grilled salmon.

STRINGTOWN PINOT BLANC   A bright golden color with yellow and emerald highlights, this wine has huge aromas of ripe melons, peaches, minerals, nectarines, honey, white flowers, icing sugar and lime zest. Floral notes and hints of talc emerge as it opens. In the mouth the wine is unctuous and has a wonderful texture balanced by ripe acidity that leads to and supports an outstanding long clean finish. Perfect with any type of seafood, and a refreshing alternative to Chardonnay.

STRINGTOWN PINOT GRIS   Ripe and spicy, this smells almost like mangos and spiced applesauce. Those notes give way to a firm apple flavor that softens to peach in the finish. It would make a good match for Asian vegetable dishes, especially if they are a tad spicy.

FINNIGAN'S LAKE CHARDONNAY   The "Fin" reminds me much more of a French Chablis than of most chardonnays you'll run into from California, as it has a much lighter, much more lemony nose than most chardonnays from there. The very fresh body has notes of vanilla and only a little bit of oak. The finish is long and light with just a hint of spice. Try it with light pastas, and almost any type of grilled or baked fish.

ORIEL COURANT CÔTES DU RHÔNE   Unlike the 2003 vintage that was 100% Syrah, the 2004 Courant is a more traditional blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache. The climate that year was much more traditional as well, not the blistering heat that marked 2003. The result is a delightful, fruit forward, spicy finish wine that should be a staple at Memorial Day barbecues, quaffed with hamburgers and London Broil.

CHAMARRÉ GRENACHE-SHIRAZ ROSÉ   This wine is elegant and structured, with a fresh and frank first impression, followed by intense raspberry and strawberry flavors, hints of spices and aniseed, and a red berry and citrus finale. Try not to drink too cold, chilling it for only a half hour to enjoy all the flavors. Wonderfully versatile, it will complement almost any dish, but I like it on its own as an aperitif.
